Concrete scanning, know what's inside before you cut.

Non-destructive scanning to locate reinforcement, electrical conduits, pipes and post-tension cables in slabs and walls. Marked out on the surface so you can cut, core or drill with confidence.

Setting out core holes on a propped slab

Every slab hides something. Reinforcing steel, electrical conduits, water lines and, in many Sydney apartment and commercial buildings, post-tensioned cables under enormous load. Hit the wrong one and you're looking at a power outage, a flood, a damaged structure or a serious injury.

Concrete scanning removes the guesswork. Using non-destructive scanning equipment such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), we locate what's inside the concrete and mark it directly on the surface, so the cutting or coring can be positioned clear of it. There's no drilling and no damage. We simply see through the slab first.

Cutaway has offered scanning alongside cutting and coring for years because the two belong together. When we scan and cut on the same visit, the person reading the scan is the person making the cut.

Post-tensioned slabs

Post-tension (PT) slabs are common in Sydney apartments, car parks and commercial buildings. The steel tendons inside are stressed to very high loads, and cutting one can cause sudden, violent failure and costly structural repairs.

Before any penetration in a PT slab, we scan to find the tendon runs and mark a safe zone. If a planned hole sits on a tendon, we'll tell you before anything is cut so the location can be moved.

Conduits, pipes and reinforcement

Older buildings often have services run through slabs with no reliable drawings. Scanning finds embedded conduits and pipes so electricians and plumbers can avoid live services.

We also map reinforcement for engineers and builders who need to know bar positions, spacing or cover before they drill anchors, fix starter bars or assess a structure.

What's included

Concrete Scanning scope.

The core of what we deliver. Every job is quoted to the site, so tell us what you need and we'll tailor the scope.

Pre-cut and pre-core scans

Clear each location before sawing, coring or drilling.

Post-tension cable location

Find and mark tendon runs in PT slabs and beams.

Conduit and pipe location

Identify embedded services so live lines aren't hit.

Reinforcement mapping

Bar position, spacing and approximate cover for engineers.

Void and slab thickness checks

Locate voids and estimate slab depth where access allows.

On-surface marking

Findings marked directly on the concrete in clear colour codes.

Our process

How the job runs.

Planned before we arrive, scanned where it matters, wet-cut and cleaned up before we leave.

Step 1

Define the area

Mark out where the cut, core or anchor needs to go.

Step 2

Scan

Non-destructive scanning across the area in a grid pattern.

Step 3

Mark up

Targets marked on the surface, with clear zones identified.

Step 4

Cut or core

Work positioned clear of targets, often on the same visit.

FAQs

Concrete Scanning questions.

Can't see your question? Call 0400 929 963.

What can concrete scanning find?

Scanning locates reinforcing bar, mesh, post-tension cables, electrical conduits, plastic and metal pipes and voids within the slab. Results depend on slab depth, density of reinforcement and moisture, so we explain what's been found and how confident the reading is.

Is concrete scanning the same as X-ray?

No. Scanning such as GPR uses radio waves and is safe to run in occupied buildings, with no need to clear the area. X-ray is a different method that needs exclusion zones and access to both sides of the slab.

Do I need to scan a post-tensioned slab?

Yes. Any cutting, coring or drilling into a PT slab should be preceded by scanning to locate the tendons. Many building managers and strata committees require it.

Can you scan and cut on the same day?

In most cases, yes. Booking scanning together with your cutting or coring is the most efficient way to run the job.

Do you provide a written report?

We mark findings on the surface as standard. If you need a report or photos for your builder, engineer or strata, let us know when you book.
